Behind Dreams After Time

Behind Dreams After Time is a series of paintings and an installation first created in response to Threads, a group show exhibited at Bridgeport Art Center (November 2022- January 2023). In this series, Fleck practices accessing his unconscious mind while allowing abstract mark-making to guide his narrative decisions. These paintings display his primal creative urge through raw brushstrokes and unflinching imagery. The series began with an end: Journey’s End, a painting that depicts a child, seemingly in distress, surrounded by symbols in an otherworldly setting. From this place of figuration and metaphorical symbolism, Fleck dissolves forms into amorphous abstractions. The following works display expressive painting and collaged drawings.

As with most of his work, in Behind Dreams After Time, Fleck relies on semiotics to infuse his work with meaning. His glossary of symbols includes the recognizable and legible, such as arrows, canoes, suns, and diamonds, as well as ambiguous gestural forms and marks. Behind Dreams After Time is intended to be experienced viscerally before being interpreted cerebrally.
